Yet, looking back, I never wrote a proper article about the city. Chania is the second city on Crete and one of the most beautiful towns around Greece or so Greeks say. This large building represents the beating heart of the city.
Crete forms a significant part of the economy and cultural heritage of Greece, while retaining its own local cultural traits (such as its own poetry and music). It was once the centre of the Minoan civilisation (c. – BC), which is the earliest known civilisation in palace of Knossos lies in Crete.
It was a beautiful day and my thoughts turned to the Minoans. What did they do each day? How did they create the first European civilisation? Why was that civilisation so wonderful? In all my years in Crete I have been to most of the Minoan sites, the palaces, the farmsteads, the villages and the ports. You see the remains of what they built so many years ago and are impressed. Located about two and half hours from Athens along the slopes of the awe-inspiring Mount Parnassus, Delphi was once revered by the ancient Greeks as the center of the earth. Dedicated to the god, Apollo, Delphi was an important oracle. In ancient times, people would come to this sacred spot to inquire of the priestess for advice on a wide range of topics from farming to relationships and politics.
Significant ruins and structures at Delphi include the Temple of Apollo, the Athenian Treasury, the theater and hippodrome that once hosted events of the ancient Pythian Games. What makes these cliffs even more inspiring are the historic monasteries perched along the summits. Dating back to the 14th and 16th centuries, the monasteries at Meteora were built by monks seeking spiritual isolation and freedom from religious persecution.

We present new evidence on vertical motions of the Hellenic subduction zone as resulting from a suite of Late Pleistocene – Holocene shorelines in western Crete Greece. Shoreline ages obtained by AMS radiocarbon dating of seashells, together with the reappraisal of shoreline ages from previous works, testify a long-term uplift rate of 2. This average value, however, includes periods in which the vertical motions vary significantly: A preliminary tectonic model attempts at explaining these up and down motions by across-strike partitioning of fault activity in the subduction zone.
Studies of past sea-level markers are commonly used to unveil the tectonic history and infer the seismic behavior of subduction zones 1 , 2 , 3. These studies usually provide estimates of upper-plate long-term uplift trends often with a large variability at the year timescale 4 , 5. Explanations proposed for this variability include the roughness of the subducting plate and down-dip variations of the locked zone 6.
Vertical motion also manifests sign changes at the timescale of — years due to the subduction earthquake cycle 7 , and at few-years distance on occasion of distinct earthquakes 8. In the Mediterranean Sea, the Hellenic subduction is the one with a supposed capability of generating very large earthquakes and tsunamis. This awareness is mainly brought forward by the historical notion of the AD event 9 , 10 , In this subduction zone, the island of Crete is one of few accessible places that may provide tectonic information on the overriding plate Figure 1.
In recent times, uplift is testified by raised shorelines and marine terraces in southwestern Crete reported in studies as old as that of Spratt 13 and recent ones, e. Nearby Paleochora, several shorelines are recognizable at various elevations; some of them are of Late Pleistocene age and correlated with eustatic peaks Supplementary Table S1 online. Another estimate at a location 33 km east of Paleochora is of 1—1.
