Unfortunately, a quarter of the whole town had recently been devastated by fire; it was difficult for him to find suitable dwellings, and he was thus forced to pay a high rent. Nevertheless, shortly after his arrival, he brought his cousin Maria Barbara from Arnstadt, and on October 17th he married her at the small church in the picturesque little village of Dornheim. Maria Barbara came of a branch of the musical Bach family, her father being organist at Gehren.

This success gave Bach the courage to put in a long and detailed report, proposing a complete renovation and improvement of the organ in the St Blasiuskirche. The Council agreed to carry out the renovation and improvements, and Bach was given the task of supervising the work, for not only was he now a brilliant player, he had also become an expert on the construction of organs. Bach was apprehensive of the latter’s growing influence, in addition to the fact that his immediate superior was a Pietist.

The Council had little option but to allow his departure. However, the situation was concluded quite amicably and Bach was asked that he should continue to supervise the rebuilding of the St Blasiuskirche organ. This he did, and some time in he came over to inaugurate its first performance. Not least was his employer, the Duke of Sachsen-Weimar, one of the most distinguished and cultured nobles of his time. Bach’s two-fold position as member of the chamber orchestra and as Organist to the Court offered him many opportunities for improvement.

The Court Orchestra consisted of about 22 players:

He learned to write dramatic openings and employ the dynamic motor rhythms and harmonic schemes found in the music of Italians such as Vivaldi , Corelli , and Torelli.

Bach absorbed these stylistic aspects in part by transcribing Vivaldi’s string and wind concertos for harpsichord and organ; many of these transcribed works are still regularly performed. Bach was particularly attracted to the Italian style in which one or more solo instruments alternate section-by-section with the full orchestra throughout a movement. Bach also started work on the Little Organ Book in Weimar, containing traditional Lutheran chorale tunes set in complex textures.

In , Bach was offered a post in Halle when he advised the authorities during a renovation by Christoph Cuntzius of the main organ in the west gallery of the Market Church of Our Dear Lady. He now took charge of his two youngest brothers, ten year old Johann Sebastian Bach and thirteen year old Johann Jacob Bach. Thus in , at the age of ten, Sebastian began to live in the household of his brother in Ohrdruf, happily taking lessons in organ and harpsichord from him. The elder Bach also encouraged him to copy music of renowned musicians of that time and watch how organs were constructed.

Simultaneously, he also attended the Gymnasium in Ohrdruf, where he had lessons in Latin, Greek, French, Italian and theology. During his period, he sang in the local choir. His soprano voice and musical capabilities soon impressed the Cantor Elias Herda.

EISENACH: Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21st l, the son of Johann Ambrosius, court trumpeter for the Duke of Eisenach and director of the musicians of the town of Eisenach in Thuringia.

Most notably they all possessed a determined spirit that thrived on adversity. And so it happened that during one of the most tragic periods of German history that the Bachs were able to accomplish outstanding musical achievements. The strong solidarity of their family ties were incredibly helpful as well. Also, they often married into families who were themselves musically inclined, mixing the creative talent of many sources. Bach’s close relatives there were some very talented composers.

However his own father did not exhibit any creative gifts, and this was probably true of his grandfather, Christoph Bach, as well. Therefore it seems as though the musical talent inherited from his father’s side accumulated in two generations before bursting forth. Although Bach’s mother died when he was 10 years old, she was still a very important influence on him. The importance of his mother’s family is shown by one fact in particular.

History[ edit ] There has been a church at the current site of the Thomaskirche at least since the 12th century. Foundations of a Romanesque building have been discovered in the choir and crossing of the current church. This monastery later became the core of the University of Leipzig founded in Thomas as he entered the order of canons after a trip to India. In , the Romanesque choir was changed to Gothic style.

Following an inflow of wealth into Leipzig from the discovery of silver in the Erzgebirge , the Romanesque nave was demolished and replaced in by the current late-Gothic hall church.

They remain happily married to this day. While twenty-three degrees of separation seems like a big enough number to continue sleeping soundly in a joint bed, the cultural acceptance of relationships with only a few degrees of separation is just too close for comfort for most. Despite cultural taboos and legal barriers, the heart of the matter lies in the fact that affectionately entwined bloodlines have played a massive role in shaping history and culture throughout human history.

As a result of their amorous affection, they bore a child, did hard time, and love still survived. The idea of it still captures the distorted fears of moviegoers today with movies like The Hills Have Eyes , Texas Chainsaw Massacre , , , Deliverance and Wrong Turn

Johann Sebastian Bach (31 March [O.S. 21 March] – 28 July ) was a German composer and musician of the Baroque period. He is known for instrumental compositions such as the Brandenburg Concertos and the Goldberg Variations as well as for vocal music such as the St Matthew Passion and the Mass in B minor.

Bach had seven children—four of whom survived to adulthood—with his first wife, Maria Barbara, and thirteen children—six of whom survived—with his second wife, Anna Magdalena. His progeny span decades: And they cross musical periods as well. One of the genres with which he is most associated is the cantata, an extended vocal work often with a sacred text consisting of a succession of recitatives and set pieces such as arias, duets, and choruses.

As the cantor for the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, Bach had to provide a cantata for every day in the church calendar. The sinfonia is in essence a concerto grosso, with a string ensemble plus a concertino comprised of woodwinds, oboes, and bassoons. Bach plays with the sonic possibilities of these groupings throughout, sometimes bringing them together, sometimes exploring their timbral contrasts.

More recently, scholars have suggested these works were created anew in the s for the Collegium. With only two children, Bach had plenty of time to lavish attention upon his son, nurturing his prodigious talent and carefully designing his education. It paid off—Wilhelm Friedemann reportedly developed a wide range of interests, including law, music performance and composition, mathematics, and philosophy.

Johann Sebastian even wrote a letter of application to help his son obtain his first job in at the Sophienkirche in Dresden. Wilhelm Friedemann appears not to have lived up to his potential, however. After leaving Dresden in , he held posts in Halle, Brunswick, and Berlin, but his musical catalog included only sporadic publications and an unfinished opera. Wilhelm Friedemann composed the Adagio and Fugue for 2 Flutes and Strings—also known as the Sinfonia in D Minor—for the church in Dresden, which used instrumental ensembles in part of the Mass.
